The Best Diamond Clarity Guide, everything you need to know about diamond clarity before you buy. Every diamond is different which makes them so desirable, yet do you know what to look for? With this guide, you will understand what diamond clarity means to your diamond and how it is graded.

The vast majority of diamonds contain some impurities, known as inclusions, which can detract from their beauty and impede light return affecting that affects the diamond clarity. The size, number, type and location of these inclusions all factor into the gem’s final clarity grade. The universal system for grading diamonds is the IF to I3 system, as charted below:

F and IF

F means internally and externally flawless. IF means internally flawless. F and IF diamonds are very rare so are expensive.

VVS1

VVS1 and VVS2

VVS means very, very slightly included. This means it is very difficult to see the impurities, even using a 10-power loupe. The numbers represent levels within this grade – VVS1s are cleaner than VVS2s.

VS

VS1 and VS2

This diamond’s clarity is very slightly included, with impurities not visible to the eye. VVS and VS are very good, which means you would need a microscope to see any flaws.

SI1

SI1 and SI2

Diamond clarity on these diamonds means the inclusions are visible under 10-power magnification and might be visible to the unaided eye. A diamond is graded SI1 even though it has no more inclusions than a VS2, but because those inclusions occur in the centre of the diamond, they are more noticeable and more likely to block light.

I1

I1, I2 and I3

These diamonds contain visible inclusions.

Certificated Diamond Report

Any distinguishing characteristic of a diamond is usually included in a thorough, detailed diamond certification report. The precision of the diamond’s symmetrical features and proportions, the natural colour of the gemstone (as defined by natural diamond characteristics) the stone’s carat weight, not just the size, any size diamond can be considered flawless and certificated, the clarity of the diamonds are the most common, and most crucial, characteristic analyzed for accurate certification. In many instances, to help jewellers and consumers understand some of the grading processes, the certification will include a diagram with each of the clarity characteristics mapped out in detail.

Which is better: IGI or GIA diamond certification?

While GIA and IGI certificates are both reputable and backed by leading laboratories, there is a more widespread use of GIA certificates within the natural diamond industry and among jewellers. However, both IGI and GIA grade on the same basic principles and diamond characteristics. Therefore, both can be trusted to provide honest assessments of diamonds.
